Background:
Dr. Juels is a fellowship-trained foot and ankle surgeon who provides specialized expertise in total ankle replacements, hindfoot and ankle reconstruction, foot and ankle trauma, sports injuries, Charcot reconstruction ankle arthroscopy, adult and pediatric flatfoot reconstruction, forefoot reconstruction, and minimally invasive surgery. Dr. Juels was raised in a small town outside of Iowa City, Iowa, where he attended West Branch High School. He was very involved in athletics growing up and played football at Beloit College in Wisconsin. He majored in chemistry at Beloit and graduated with honors. He attended Des Moines University Osteopathic Medical School-CPMS for his medical education and was salutatorian of his class. Dr. Juels completed his foot and ankle surgical residency at Ascension/Wheaton Franciscan-St. Joseph’s in Milwaukee. During residency, Dr. Juels held the leadership position of chief resident and worked with national leaders in the field of reconstructive foot and ankle surgery. He received trauma training at the University of Missouri and total ankle replacement training in California with Shasta Orthopaedics. He then completed a one-year advanced foot and ankle reconstruction fellowship at The CORE Institute in Phoenix, which included an emphasis on complex hindfoot and ankle reconstruction as well as primary and revision total ankle replacements. Dr. Juels has presented and published several manuscripts and research projects pertaining to foot and ankle reconstruction. This includes topics such as plantar plate repair, ankle fractures, total ankle replacement, talus allografting, and Lisfranc injuries. Dr. Juels emphasizes treating each of his patients as if they were his own family and utilizes nonoperative management whenever possible and precise surgery when required. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his wife (Katie), his daughter (Lyla), his son (Leo) and his dog (Zoie). His hobbies include playing basketball, golfing, fishing, wakeboarding, and hiking.
